Roulette Terms You Need to Know About

These are the most useful roulette terms. I will keep adding to them and updating this page. Please feel free to let me know about other words i should add to this list.

An Agent is working in cahoots with the croupier to cheat the casino.

When a player bets everything they have they go All-In.

American Roulette is played in America’s. The wheel is numbered 1-36 with 0 and 00. The house edge is higher when compared to European roulette.

Ball Track or backtrack is the rim of the wheel where the ball is spun.

Bet on the Layout: A wager placed anywhere on the numbers part of the table.

Biased Wheel refers to a wheel on which not all numbers are equally likely to win. The term Biased Numbers is also used to describe this phenomenon.

Black Bet refers to a wager that the next number will be black.

Carre means corner bet. The chip is placed at the corner of the numbers. A corner bet pays 8-1 and has a 10.8% probability of winning on European Roulette

Chameleon Strategy: A roulette term used to describe a player who is mimicking the strategy of other players who are doing well at the roulette table.

Cold Numbers have not come up for at least 37 spins.

Colonne: French term meaning a Column Bet.

Column Bet A bet that covers almost one-third of the wheel and which pays out 2-1.

Column Bet: A bet on one of the three available columns of numbers. Pays 2 to 1.

Column Bet: When a bet is placed on one of the three available columns (each one consisting of 12 numbers). This pays two to one

A Casino will Comp something for free, like a suite or a free bonus in the case of online casinos.

Combination Bet has one or more chips on two or more numbers.

Croupier, or dealer, spins the wheel and pays out the winnings.

Call Bets is an exotic term normally shouted out when the wheel is spinning. “Voisins Du Zero”

Dead Table is open but has no players

Dolly is a widget which covers the winning number. The dilly is removed when all of the winning bets have been paid out.

Double Up System aka “The Martingale” system is to your double your bet after a loss until you win.

Double Zero Is only on American roulette wheels.

Dozens Bet covers the three possible dozen numbers:1 to 12, 13 to 24 and 25 to 36.

En Plein is French for “Straight Up Bet”

En Prison is French for “in prison”. A rule is applied to even money bets only.  If you win on a zero you a required to let it ride. If the second spin, if in the next spin the outcome is again zero, then the entire wager is lost.

European Roulette uses a wheel with only one zero pockets which means the odds are more in your favour. Keep an eye out for this variant.

Even Money Bet pays out 1:1, e.g. red/black.

Flat Betting is to bet the same amount on every spin.

French Bets cover certain physical sections of the roulette wheel to cover all the numbers in each wheel section.

Five Number bet covers the 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3

Gaffed Wheel is a wheel rigged by the casino.

George is a big tipper as opposed to a Grifter who is a scammer and cheat

Green Pockets are the zero and double zero on the roulette wheel.

Grind Joint is a casino with low betting limits.

Heat is what you get from the casino management if you are winning too much.

High or Low are even money bets on all the low numbers of 1 to 18 or all the high numbers of 19 to 36.

High Roller or a whale bets a large amount of money.

Hot Numbers aka Golden Numbers land more frequently than they should be based on probability.

House Edge is the casino percentage they expect to win based on long-term mathematics.

Inside Bets are made on the inside of the betting grid and include single number bets and corner bets.

La Partage: similar to the En Prison rule, however, the player loses half their bet and doesn’t have the option of leaving their bet for a later spin.

Line Bet is on six numbers, two lines of 3 numbers on the betting grid. This pays out 5-1, with a 16% chance of winning and is one of the better bets to make.

Martingale System is where you double your bet after a losing bet to claw back into profit. This only works if the table maximum is high and you have deep pockets.

The marker is a device used by the croupier to mark the winning number after each spin.

Mucker is a second croupier to assist during busy times. They help out by double checking the dealer’s maths and pay out the winning bets.

Negative Progression is a system of increasing your bet after each loss. For example, the Martingale, the Fibonacci and the Super Martingale.

Neighbour is a  bet centred on one number.

Odds are the payout ratio upon winning.

Orphans a bet on three numbers that are close together on the wheel.  For example, 6, 34 & 17.

Outside Bet is anything, not an inside bet. An example being red/black or odd/even.

Parlay “Let it ride.”

Pinching is removing chips after a losing bet with the hope the dealer doesn’t notice.

Pockets are the numbers on the roulette table on the wheel. The ball sits inside the pocket

Positive Progression is increasing your bets after a win to accelerate profits on winning streaks.

Red Bet “stick it all on the red” (all red numbers) and it pays 1:1.

Roulette chips are differing colours so that each player has a unique colour.

Run is a run of events like four reds in a row

Sector Bet is also called a Neighbours bet.

Section Slicing aims to spot biased wheels and allocate them as hot and cold zones.

Six Line Be a line bet on six numbers and pays out at 5-1 odds.

Split Bet is bet on two numbers side by side on the table. It pays out at odds of 17-1.

Square Bet is on four numbers and pays 8:1.

One Stack is 20 chips stacked one on top of another

Straight Bet is a single number bet. It pays 35:1

Street Bet bets pay out at 11-1 with an 8% chance of winning. Also called a Trio Bet. The bet is made by placing chips on the edge of a row of three numbers

Surrender is similar to en prison. Players bet rides over for another spin if the ball lands in zero.

Tiers Du Cylindre is a bet on a group of numbers on a section of the roulette wheel which are paired neighbours on the layout.

Toke is the dealer’s tips.

Tournaments are competitions against other players at online roulette.

Wager is bet.

Zero is the space on a roulette wheel marked 0.
